Astrology December 2024: Astro Weather
December is when the various moving parts of our lives start coming apart so we can do a thorough review and build in 2025.
The first half of December is a highly uncertain period, thanks to both Mercury Retrograde and Mars retrograde, and we will need to show patience, stamina and keep a very open mind. The height of confusion may well arrive at the Gemini Full Moon mid-month, which is also when Mercury stations direct, unleashing a potential avalanche of information. Make only tentative plans this month, as Mercury will take a while to stabilise his course. As for Mars, he will only get deeper and deeper into tricky territory, urging us to uncover our true motives and desires before we can once again move forward.
Mars won’t turn direct again until February 24th, and won’t fully return to normal until May. So save your energy. Whatever your goal, it will be a marathon run, not a sprint.
Crucially, the Jupiter-Saturn square also perfects this month ensuring we feel those growing pains - especially when it comes to how we handle news and information coming to light, against a rather confusing backdrop. The Sun and Mercury connect with Jupiter and Saturn repeatedly over the course of December to keep us on our toes. With two New Moons bracketing December - a Sagittarius New Moon on the 1st and a Capricorn New Moon on the 30th - we’re in for some new beginnings. So let’s slowly climb up that ramp that is to lead to the rollercoaster of 2025 and be patient as we hear the machinery cranking up.
So let's see what our December 2024 astrology has in store. Or you can jump to your December Zodiac Sign Horoscope or just check out December's Astrology Calendar by Date.
Sagittarius New Moon, December 1st: Room to Grow
December begins with a most instructive and opportune Sagittarius New Moon at 06:21 GMT on the 1st at 09:32 degrees Sagittarius.
This New Moon connects closely with Saturn and Jupiter, opening the doors to great opportunities for knowledge, growth and success that need to be handled responsibly.
The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon: “a theatrical presentation of a golden-haired goddess of opportunity” also talks of opportunity which is very fitting for Jupiter’s seed, the ruler of Sagittarius. There is some garishness in this image, however, a bit like the dramatic fanfare of cultural propaganda, almost overemphasising the riches and success awaiting any individual willing to do what it takes. Saturn’s presence reminds us that growth and success cannot be forced but will take time and commitment. Sustainable growth demands integrity and a cautious examination of which aspects of the past we need to keep intact and which to discard as empty shells.
All this is an important balancing act and it its important to do our best to get it right rather than trying to force rapid results.
The time has also come to take stock. For this New Moon also happens during Mercury retrograde (since Nov 26). Mercury now conjuncts the Sun and Moon, trying to derive meaning from recent experience and wrap up loose ends. This is a process that characterises early to mid-December but may continue to quietly unfold all the way until June 2025.
An open mind and an open heart are both key so we can allow a fresh vision to emerge in its own time, without forcing things.
With Chiron in trine, this is a time of healing. And as the Sun and Moon widely trine Mars and the North Node too, intentions set on December 1st carry momentum.
December 4th - 6th is an important reality check, bringing some clarity and new ideas. That’s when the Sun meets Mercury opposite Jupiter and square Saturn. It is also when Mars turns retrograde. Let the marathon run of changes begin.
Mercury Retrograde Conjunct the Sun, December 6th: A New Perspective
On December 6th at 02:17 GMT Mercury meets the Sun for a thorough debriefing.
This is an important turning point in our thinking, as we are done pondering the hows and wherefores of the past and begin trying to visualise the future.
Also on the 6th, the Mercury-Saturn square is exact, making for sombre thoughts and tough conversations. An opposition to Jupiter and a trine to Chiron demand honesty and authenticity in our talk and thought.
We have a very tentative couple of weeks ahead of us, until Mercury turns direct on the 15th and stabilises his course.
It is important not to sign on any dotted lines, etc, during this period, avoid tech purchases and pay attention to fiddly things, as our eye for details is not sharp right now. Let’s take time to contemplate the bigger picture instead and to light the fire of hope and vision in our mind’s eye.
Mars Retrograde in Leo, December 6th: Where's My Mojo?
On December 6th it’s Mars’ turn to go retrograde at 06:10 degrees Leo at 23:33GMT.
There is no use pushing now. Things will happen in their own sweet time. With both Mars and Mercury retrograde, anything put on the back burner, or swept under the carpet, will rise to the surface demanding resolution.
While Mercury goes direct December 15th, Mars will stay retrograde until February 24th 2025, giving us plenty of time to get ini there and sort things out.
Mars retrograde is a marathon run. Tiredness is often a side effect of this transit. So we need to pace ourselves. Action heroes now lose their mojo. It helps to see this as a test of endurance, will and stamina. Aggressive acts during Mars retrograde don’t go well for the aggressor. This is not the time to make the first move. It’s time to hit pause and examine our motives.
This is a great time to return to old projects, situations, or quarrels that require sustained effort, patience and grit to untangle all the knots.
Mars is closest to the earth when retrograde, and at his brightest and most visible. And so themes to do with war, aggression, and general disgruntlement invariably become obvious and need to be dealt with. This may be a time of rancour, but if so, it’s to help clear the decks, move the energy along, and put the spring back in our step! Mars retrograde only happens once every two years. It’s not a big ask to examine our true motives and desires now, overcome any obstacles and stay the course.
As Mars retrogrades in Leo, the question of leadership is at the forefront of our minds.
It’s important that we find our own inner leader now, rather than merely looking for star-quality outside ourselves. From January 6th, Mars backtracks into Cancer and it is our home, family and country that’s brought into sharper focus. Deeply rooted tribal themes of safety, shelter and protection will now take us all the way to next Spring. We'll revisit these themes in the January forecast.
Mars Retrograde Timeline: Dates
Mars has been treading uncertain ground (his retrograde shadow) since October 9th, slowly preparing us for the changes that are to come.
On December 6th, Mars turns retrograde - let the games begin!
Look out for December 12th when Mars opposes Venus, pitting our motives against our values and preferences. December could see the culmination of desire seeded at the Venus-Mars conjunction of last February the 22nd.
Next month, January 3rd Mars opposes Pluto and tests our will - a repeat of a powerful aspect that took place during the US election .
January 16th crystallises important themes of home and family, safety and country as the Sun and Mars oppose.
Such tribal themes will take us forward all the way to April 18th, which is when Mars re-enters Leo.
December 30th - April 6th Mars goes Out of Bounds (veering off the apparent path of the sun). This adds to the unruly nature of the first three months of 2025, calling on us to become fully aware of our desires, initiatives and aggressive drives, and act with greater independence.
By the time Mars finishes this entire journey and exits his retrograde shadow on May 1st 2025, we can be singing in earnest: I did it my waaay.
Venus in Aquarius, December 7th: Delight In Future Promise!
On December 7th Venus enters Aquarius - time for some friendly fun! December starts on a rather sombre mood so thank goodness for Venus lightening things up a bit. Venus activates the Mini Grand Trine between Uranus, Neptune and Pluto from December 2nd and 4th and until the 7th, creating a loving space for excitement, romance and transformation. Pluto is freshly in Aquarius since November 19th , with the help of Uranus and Neptune, is ushering us into a brand new world awaiting our discovery. And Venus is the first to touch base allowing us to delighting in that newness!
This is a chance to upgrade our values and preferences to match this upcoming quantum leap of consciousness.
Venus will stay in Aquarius making for a wonderful time to come together in the spirit of friendship and human solidarity from December 7th all the way until January 3rd. December 10th-13th could be quite exciting as Venus harmonises with the Lunar Nodes, opposes Mars Retrograde and sextiles Mercury Retrograde. Venus is as far as she can be from both Mars and Mercury now and this allows us to see our values and preferences more clearly. Venus sextile the North Node on the 10th also paves the way for Pluto to do the same on New Year’s Eve, right on cue to usher in a year unlike any we’ve seen before.
Neptune Stations Direct, December 7th: Dreams and Disenchantment
Also by December 7th Neptune is stationary in the skies and about to go direct, creating a thick sort of emotional fog.
This could be a highly evocative, poignant time, as all sorts of hopes, dreams and yearnings reach critical mass and get released into the atmosphere.
Whatever we have longed for in private for the past five months it’s time to release it into the cosmos. Neptune’ station can be a moment of transcendence, like a wave merging into the ocean, as one with the currents within it. Time to surf that wave.
Gemini Full Moon, December 15th: Imaginative Madness!
And so we arrive at December’s Gemini Full Moon at 09:01GMT at 23:52 degrees of Gemini - and it’s a zinger! Not only is this Full Moon square to Neptune, creating confusion and misdirection all about. It also happens on the very day that Gemini’s ruler, Mercury turns direct! This is a prime recipe for trickster mishaps, for mistakes, miscommunications and general madness. On the plus side, there is a really thin veil between the mind and spirit now.
This lunation could be deeply imaginative, mystical, revelatory even - full of amazing insights! And while important data is rising to the surface, it's all jumbled up and riddled with noise. Best wait for the dust to settle...
The best way to use this lunation is to engage in creative, spiritual and non-mundane pursuits… Keep travel, emails etc to a minimum. Have back-up electronics to hand. As is usual with Mercury’s stations, most moving parts of our lives won’t be moving in tandem as yet. So take this day as it comes and enjoy the inspiration and ideas it brings. You may need some rest afterward, especially if Mercury is emphasised in your chart. This is a trickster moment!
The Gemini Full Moon also allows us to heal and reclaim some sense of sovereignty, thanks to a solar trine to Chiron. Embrace whatever flaws you find as part of the process. The approaching square to the Lunar Nodes also makes it clear that we are at an important crossroads between past and future, something that will become even more pronounced at the Capricorn New Moon on December 30th.
The Sabian Symbol for this Full Moon is “children skating over a frozen village pond.”
It reminds us that we can transcend seemingly restrictive environmental factors using our imagination - and even have fun doing so!
It’s mind over matter and, often a change of perspective is enough. Expect the influence of this Full Moon to be quite diffuse, spreading both confusion and delight over a number of days - especially in the run up to the 15th-16th. Try to keep a loose schedule and don't pile up your to do list.
Mercury Stations Direct in Sagittarius, December 15th: Newsflash!
On the same day as the Gemini Full Moon we have Gemini’s ruler, Mercury stationing direct at 20:56GMT at 06SG23 Sagittarius. This is a super-precarious point. Things can go haywire, as part of us remains careless or distracted.
Leave anything that requires an eye for detail for another day - preferably once Mercury has had a few days to straighten his course.
Better yet, take the holidays to get your head straight and leave it all for the new year. Give your mind room to roam, experiment, and dream up new stuff this holiday season!
As is usual with Mercury’s cycle, we won’t be able to fully mentally digest the events of this period until a few years from now. But if you’re wondering when you’ll know some stuff for sure, expect clarity by February 2025.
Sun in Capricorn, December 21st: Winter Solstice
The December Solstice arrives at 09:20GMT this year, which is when the Sun enters Capricorn. Time to celebrate!
There’s a wonderful aspect in the run up to the Solstice, as Venus trines Jupiter on the 20th - the perfect atmosphere for luxury, love and pleasure!
You might find yourself indulging in all sorts of things: eating more, spending more - whatever you love, doing more of it - so watch out. This is a great day to connect, celebrate in style and have some fun with friends, especially as both Jupiter and Venus are in air signs, the chatter-boxers of the zodiac.
The Jupiter-Saturn Square, December 24th: Stretch Those Limits!
The Christmas holidays bring some serious thinking about the future.
This is due to the Jupiter-Saturn square arriving on the 24th, which is also activated by Mercury within three days, on the 27th. Time to think things through, and seek out more information so we can make a commitment. With the Sun also squaring the Lunar Nodes on the 23rd, this is a crucial decision point toward a better future rather than a rinse-repeat of the past.
The Jupiter-Saturn square is like a bench-press for our minds and hearts, teaching us greater intellectual flexibility as well as personal humility and compassion for alternate viewpoints.
It’s time to let in some fresh air - in the form of fresh news, data and communications - into the mire of our own psychological soup, i.e. our own particular cocktail of well practiced self-deception.
This is the so-called ‘opening square’ of the Jupiter-Saturn cycle, the seed of which was planted at the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius at the end of 2020.
Think back to December 2020. In what way did you commit to your own growth, expansion and success back then? It’s time for a progress report.
Those early seeds are getting tested out in the real world. And it’s time to incorporate any lessons and move forward wiser and stronger.
Jupiter and Saturn first clashed each other 19th August 2024 (see August Astrology 2024: Growing Pains) and this is their second pass. So the experience is not new. It might help you to think back on challenges that arose last summer and see how far you've come from then. You're ready to take the next step. The key is to be realistic but not let fears stop you from venturing forward. Your ability to entertain new possibilities has been maturing since August and it's time to consider how to make them happen.
The final conversation between Jupiter and Saturn won’t happen until 15 June 2025, but both Saturn and Jupiter will have changed signs by then, squaring each other right across Aries and Cancer. So December 24th sees is the last clash in mutable signs Pisces and Gemini. This is an opportunity to learn and grow in a softer, more flexible environment and it’s crucial that we stretch our mental container and strengthen our spiritual core as much as we can. For once Jupiter and Saturn square each other from Cancer and Aries, things will be much more dynamic, calling for courage and action.
Come June, there won’t be a moment to lose in implementing what we’ve learned. So let’s stretch as much as we can so we can hit the ground running.
Jupiter squares Saturn exactly on December 24th at 21:59 GMT at the 15th degree of Pisces and Gemini but their influence it will be felt throughout the month.
Chiron Stations Direct, December 29th: Let the Healing Begin
On December 29th Chiron stations direct at 19 degrees Aries, after nearly five months in retrograde motion. This could be a real moment of vulnerability. A release of energy that opens up pathways to healing the wounds and wrongs of the past. This is both collectively, so we can have a better integrated society, as well as personally, so we can move on more whole.
Time to embrace a more authentic path and to move forward with a healing process that has been long in the making.
Notably, Chiron now moves inexorably forward toward another more modern body, Eris - goddess of discord and sister of Mars - a dwarf planet similar to Pluto. Watch out for the Chiron-Eris conjunction arriving May 2025. If this was a movie it could easily be called ‘Revenge Of The Underdog.’ A better working title, perhaps is “Healing All The Discord.” A time of reckoning is approaching.
Capricorn New Moon, December 30th: Strategise for 2025
December closes with another New Moon, in Capricorn this time, on December 30th at 22:26 GMT at 09:43 degrees. We have a brand new year around the corner and it’s time to set some fresh intentions.
At the threshold of New Year’s Eve it's time to get clear on the way we want to structure our world moving forward.
Capricorn is all about setting goals, all about structure and achievement. And with an asteroid called Pallas / Athena conjunct this New Moon, creative strategising is what it's all about. Time to think things through and come up with some good ideas for how we want to approach the year ahead.
The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon is “an albatross feeding from the hand of a sailor.” This symbolises trust, compassion and, above all, the idea of ‘first do no harm.’ With that idea as a guiding light even the rarest and wildest beast can be tamed. Similarly, as the bird trusts the sailor who radiates goodness, and overcomes its fear, so it receives some nourishment, ensuring its survival.
Overcoming fear is a crucial component of this fresh beginning we are making now, as we head into 2025.
Only by having mutual trust, respect and understanding can we live peacefully and reap the rewards that await us.
This New Moon squares the Lunar Nodes, or eclipse points, reminding us once more that December finds us at a crossroads. The choices we now make will be crucial for the future. Thankfully, Pluto is now on our side, harmonising with the Lunar Nodes.
A real opportunity is now emerging to transmute old energies and emerge like a phoenix from the ashes.
